Two-dimensional magnetism realized in van der Waals (vdWs) magnets in recent years has offered promising prospects for future information technology. However, rare vdWs ferromagnetic semiconductors, which enable simultaneous control of both carriers and spins, are particularly crucial for developing 2D magnetic devices with novel functionalities. Metal thiophosphates (MTP) represent a versatile vdWs material system that integrates the highly sought-after properties of complex oxides, positioning it as a promising vdWs magnetic material family. Here, we successfully synthesized a novel vdWs ferromagnetic semiconductor MTP AgVP2Se6 single crystal with a room-temperature resistivity of 1 Ω·m. Owing to the vdWs bonding characteristic along the c-axis, the magnetic properties of few-layer AgVP2Se6 with varying thicknesses were characterized on exfoliated samples. The magnetism of AgVP2Se6 flakes exhibits distinct thickness-dependent behavior: rectangular magnetic hysteresis loops are observed in 6.7 nm AgVP2Se6 flakes, featuring a large coercive field of 750 Oe at 2 K and an unreduced Curie temperature of 19 K. This vdWs ferromagnet AgVP2Se6 with semiconducting behavior will serve as an alternative platform for exploring potential applications in 2D magnetism and spintronic devices.
