One of the preventive strategies used, during and after the Council of Trent, by the prelates of Salento to avert the Lutheran contagion was a renewed stimulus to the cult of the saints. Both those coming from the ranks of the new religious orders, champions of the Catholic Reformation, and the ancient saints, modernized in anti-lutheran function. Civic patronages and iconography of baroque altars and facades still show today - albeit in a veiled form - this intervention.
