Anthropogenic sources of contamination of the Halong bay are numerous. A large part of the contaminants is drained by runoff in the Red River delta, leading to sediments rich in complex organic matter and heavy metals. We isolated a spore-forming, motile, rod-shaped mesophilic and anaerobic Gram-positive bacterium, designated Tepidibacter sp. strain 8C15b, from estuarian sediments of the Haiphong Bay.
