Male Brandt's voles (2 months old, adult voles) for our experiments were collected from laboratory colonies at the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. They were housed in plastic cages (30×15×20cm) with corn cob as bedding material and provided with rabbit pellets (containing 18% protein, 3% fat, 12% fiber, and 47% carbohydrate, Beijing KeAo Bioscience Co.) and water ad libitum. Fecal pellet samples were collected in the day before the end of the experiment. Voles were placed in a sterile cage to defecate, and fresh feces were collected and stored in a sterile centrifuge tube for about five minutes.
