In <em>Emperor Qianlong’s Reply to King George III</em> (1793), the Chinese emperor forcefully rejects all the requests and provides reasons, insisting that all foreign trade can only be conducted under strict regulation at the port of Canton. The reply has one Latin version and one English version. The Latin version was translated by European missionaries serving in the court (H. Wang, 2011, p. 14). The English version was collected in The Chronicles of the East India Company Trading to China (1635-1834) Vol.2 (Morse, 1926, 247-252).
