The purpose of this project was to identify an aquatic non-tuberculous mycobacterial isolate from river sediment in the southeastern U.S., and to characterize its biosynthetic gene clusters in comparison to those of other mycobacteria. Non-tuberculous mycobacteria possess uncharacterized biosynthetic gene clusters that are likely to produce novel metabolites. Characterization of these biosynthetic pathways and their products has the potential to improve understanding of the ecology of aquatic mycobacteria, and also to yield new antimicrobial or anti-tumor compounds.
