aStaining was scored semi-quantitatively where 0 is no staining 1 (1�C15%), 2 (16�C30%), and 3 (31�C50%), and the intensity of staining was scored on a scale of 0�C3, where 0 is no staining and 3 is intense staining.bActivated BAX has a distinct punctate staining which is easily distinguished form inactive BAX, 0 is no staining, 1 (1�C5%), 2 (5�C10%), and 3 (10�C15%). Activated Bax has a uniform intense staining and so no intensity score was given.
