The role of professional member organisations in advancing women in healthcare leadership

This PhD examined the roles and responsibilities of membership-based medical organisations — including specialist medical colleges and professional associations — in Australia and New Zealand, identifying opportunities to advance women into healthcare leadership. Drawing on five studies across multiple methods, it found that these organisations extend beyond training and have a responsibility to prioritise gender equity. Most were early in their gender equity journey. The research identified opportunities at the systems level: dismantling bias, supporting gender-equitable and flexible training and work, and strengthening advocacy. It emphasised shifting from individual-focused approaches toward systemic and organisational change to achieve equitable healthcare leadership.
