C3H/HeOuJ mice were supplemented vitamin B12 in drinking water and challenged with C. rodentium, a mouse-specific pathogen. Microbial analysis of the microbiome in the ileum, cecum, and colon was accomplished using the 16S rRNA amplicon (V3-V4) sequencing technology. The cecal metatranscriptome was analyzed to determine how microbial community activity changes in response to higher than normal vitamin B12 concentrations in the gastrointestinal tract. This work will help to determine the upper limit vitamin B12 supplementation and improve our understanding of how vitamin B12 affects the gut ecosystem and health.
