Snow surface conditions were recorded along the traverse route from the coast to the summit of the Dronning Maud Land ice sheet, Antarctica. This facilitated the construction of a dataset of images for each snow surface pattern caused by snow deposition and erosion. The number of divided snow surface patterns was 37,821 (JARE59: November 13, 2017 to January 24, 2018) and 8,272 (JARE60: November 18, 2018 to January 19, 2019). Using the image dataset, the study provided an example of snow surface pattern classification through an image classification model. The image dataset is compared with previously collected snow surface patterns and used as a resource for investigating the surface mass balance of the ice sheet.
