Examining the Effectiveness of Business Incubators in Supporting Start-ups in Borno State, Nigeria

Abstract: This study examines the effectiveness of business incubators in supporting start-ups in Borno State, Nigeria, a region ravaged by the Boko Haram insurgency. The research investigates the current state of business incubation, identifies challenges faced by entrepreneurs and business incubators, and examines the impact of business incubators on entrepreneurial outcomes. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining survey data from 400 start-ups and thematic analysis of qualitative data. The results indicate that business incubators play a significant role in promoting entrepreneurship development in the region, with a significant positive relationship found between business incubation services and effectiveness in supporting start-ups. The study also reveals that business incubators face challenges in providing adequate support services, including limited access to finance and inadequate infrastructure. However, the incubators are providing valuable services, including training and mentorship, and networking opportunities. The study's findings have significant implications for policymakers, entrepreneurs, and business incubator managers, highlighting the need for improved funding, infrastructure, and tailored support services to enhance the effectiveness of business incubators. The study concludes that business incubators are vital for promoting start-ups in Borno State, Nigeria, and recommends a multi-faceted approach to address the challenges faced by entrepreneurs and business incubators. The study adopts the Resource-Based View (RBV) theory, emphasizing the importance of resources and capabilities in entrepreneurship development.
