We grew 21 species of British grassland plants in field soil under glasshouse conditions and extracted the DNA from rhizosphere soil following a 12 week growth period. Three environmental treatments were imposed on the plants: control; 60 % WHC with no shade cover, shaded; 60 % WHC with 55 % shade cover, and water limited; 45 % WHC with no shade. Data comprise of raw fungal (internal transcribed spacer region 2) amplicon sequences obtained via Illumina MiSeq sequencing. ITS3F and ITS4R primers were used.
