Bacterial populations that use dimethylsulfide as the carbon and energy source in a terrestrial soil and a lake sediment were investigated using stable isotope probing. Three sets of replicated microcosms were prepared using soil and lake sediment samples and amended with [13C2]-DMS or [12C2]-DMS as controls. Microbial communities involved in DMS degradation were analysed by pyrosequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA genes from the ‘heavy’ and ‘light’ fractions of the time-point samples. The samples that are part of this bioproject are the 454 pyrosequencing data of SIP gradient fractions from SIP microcosm samples.
