Discussion of 其他 [qí tā] other, else (referring to other things or people) - Trainchinese

1 - In this post, we compare two pronouns: 别的 and 其他。 They have similar meanings and are used in almost the same ways. There are only some slight differences: 1. They can both be used before a noun. When they appear before a noun, 的 after 其他 is optional; but 的 cannot be used after 别的: 其他 ＋ (的) ＋ Noun: E.g. 这个款式有其他(的)颜色吗？ [phr] Are there any other colors of this style? 别的 ＋Noun: E.g. 这个款式有别的颜色吗？ 2. If we use 其他 in the sentence above, we need to add 的: “我现在没有时间想其他的，……” 3. 其他 can be followed by a measure word-numeral phrase, but 别的 cannot be used in this way. E.g. 我把这二十个生词背下来了，其他几个明天再说。 [phr] I have memorized these twenty new words, leaving the others (new words) to tomorrow. 2 - What are some synonyms for 其他 (qítā)? 3 - In this post, we discuss the difference between 其他 and 其余. First, let's take a look at 其他. 其他 means “other, else“. It may refer to persons or things. E.g.: Example 1. 刘翔跑在前面，其他人紧随其后。 [phr] Liu Xiang ran ahead and other athletes followed after him closely. Example 2. 地震地区的难民搬到了其他城市。 [phr] The refugees of the earthquake area have moved to other cities. Meanwhile, 其他 can also refer to “additional“, e.g. Example 3. 这个款式有其他的颜色吗？ [phr] Are there any other colors of this style? Example 4. 你还喜欢其他运动吗？ [phr] Do you like any other sports? On the other hand, 其余 means “all the other persons or things, the rest, the remainder“. It emphasizes on “all the rest“, e.g. Example 5. 这本书除了序言，其余的部分都不好看。 [phr] Except for the preface, the rest of this book is not interesting. According to the context, we might be able to use both in the same context. This happens when the meaning of “all the rest, all the others“ applies. E.g. Example 6. 我把这二十个生词背下来了，其他几个明天再说。 [phr] I have memorized these twenty new words, leaving the others (new words) to tomorrow.
