Sulfobacillus thermotolerans is a common inhabitant of extremely acidic metal-rich ecological niches. It plays a leading role in both ferrous iron and sulfur oxidation in acidophilic communities of microorganisms. The strain is of particular importance for biotechnologies of sulfide raw material treatment at the temperatures above 35°C and increased concentrations of toxic components of processed sulfide ores.
