Quantification of ikaite in first year sea ice, Dease Strait, 2016

Sea ice cores were collected from Dease Strait in April-May 2016 to determine ikaite concentration. The objectives were to develop a new method of quantifying ikaite using dissolved inorganic carbon analysis of filtered crystals, to add to the limited database of ikaite measurements in sea ice, and to examine the relationship between ikaite and environmental parameters such as sea ice temperature, salinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, and total alkalinity. Quantification of ikaite will improve understanding of its overall significance in terms of the sea ice carbon pump. This sampling program was a follow up to a similar program that took place near Station Nord, Greenland in April 2015.
