Overview of wind speed distribution models

Environmental hazards such as pollution, global warming and climate change raised an alarm on the use of non renewable energies such as fossil fuels.. To reduce or stop their use, clean, sustainable and renewable resources are employed. Among these, Wind is a clean and sustainable resource whose implementation is progressing worldwide, supplying millions of households. Nevertheless, it is intermittent and stochastic such that before extracting this resource, a preliminary study is done to evaluate its potential in an area. Based on this study, one can conclude whether energy can be produced for large scale or small scale electricity supply. Such an evaluation is done by modeling the wind speed distribution. But various regimes exist, such that distributions may not always fit them properly. This led to an intensive use and development of models to carry out this task. The present work is an overview of the various models employed in different studies.
