China (2005): HIV/AIDS TRaC Study Examining Condom Use among Construction Workers in Mengzi. First Round.

Construction workers are considered to be mobile populations, coming to more prosperous cities from smaller towns and from poor provinces. Mobile populations have been identified as being at higher risk for HIV due to the predominance of young men who often leave wives and families behind when moving to cities for work. This survey among male construction workers had four objectives: 1) To identify and describe segments of construction workers in terms of: consistent condom use with all partners, consistent condom use with commercial partners, and condom use at last commercial sex; 2) To gain an understanding of knowledge and attitudes regarding HIV/AIDS and STI among construction workers, and to monitor key factors over time; 3) To provide baseline measures for key indicators of PSI/China's related programs on construction workers; 4) To use study data to develop suitable training materials for construction workers to reduce their risk for HIV.
