Dataset: 69 Alabama referred hemochromatosis probands with iron overload

We measured relative areas of red blood cell (RBC) volume subgroups and total RBC volumes in automated hematology analyzer RBC volume histogram images using SketchAndCalc™ (Flagler Beach, FL, USA), an on-line application of Gauss’ area formula which is accurate to 10,000 decimal places, as described elsewhere in detail.In a retrospective study of referred <i>HFE </i>p.C282Y homozygous probands with iron overload, we compared associations of mean corpuscular volune (MCV) and percentages of small (≥100.0-109.9 fL) and large (≥110.0-200.0 fL) macrocytes as dependent variables with these independent variables: age, sex, transferrin saturation (TS), serum ferritin (SF), and HLA-A*03 positivity at diagnosis, and iron removed to achieve iron depletion (QFe).The three aims of this study were the following: 1) to compare characteristics of men and women; 2) to identify associations of MCV and percentages of small and large macrocytes as dependent variables with age, sex, TS, SF, HLA-A*03 positivity, and QFe as independent variables; and 3) to compare MCV as a dependent variable with percentages of small and large macrocytes as dependent variables.
