Powdery mildew disease is one of the most devastating fungal diseases limiting legume productivity worldwide. This disease is caused by obligate biotrophic fungi that can only survive on living host cells. They are known to modulate host cellular architecture and metabolism to divert nutrients for their growth and reproduction while limiting host defense responses including cell death. To capture host responses associated with powdery mildew resistance and identify novel pathogen effector candidates, the transcriptomes of the model legume Medicago truncatula and the powdery mildew pathogen Erysiphe pisi were simultaneously profiled at an early infection time point during compatible and incompatible interactions.
