The genetic diversity, population history and origins of the Mongolian horse remain incompletely characterized due to insufficient amount of the material analyzed. The main goal of our study is to determine the genetic diversity of ancient (the Khereksur and Deer Stone and the Xiongnu archaeological cultures) and modern horse populations of Mongolia based on the analysis of mitochondrial genome variation.
