The life and principate of the Emperor Gaius

This thesis consists essentially of a biography of the Emperor Gains. It aims to establish whether a close examination of the ancient tradition about Gains confirms the view of the ancients or whether it supports the conclusions reached by a number of modern historians that the emperor was quite sane and rational. It further aims to provide a comprehensive study of the life and principate of Gaius, together with a discussion of a number of issues arising from the life or reign which have either not been previously considered in detail or have only been considered in fragmentary form. One of its overall aims, therefore, is to bring together in one study all of the available evidence for the life and principate of the Emperor Gaius.
