资源简介:
The overall purpose is to obtain reliable, current information on the harvest of Qamanirjuaq caribou from Kivalliq harvesters to assist with conservation of the herd and protection of the Inuit traditional subsistence caribou harvest. This is a multi-jurisdictional project which is gathering summary harvest information for 2015-2016 from approximately 10 communities in Nunavut, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Northwest Territories which harvest Qamanirjuaq caribou. This multi-jurisdictional project is scheduled for September 2016 to March 2017. A Nunavut sub-project has also been undertaken to obtain quantitative and qualitative information on the 2015-2016 harvest of caribou by harvesters from the five Kivalliq communities on the Qamanirjuaq caribou range (Arviat, Baker Lake, Chesterfield Inlet, Rankin Inlet, and Whale Cove). Overall, this harvest information will help to ensure the caribou range communities are involved in caribou conservation, identify the numbers of caribou that communities need for subsistence, determine the economic value of caribou for harvesters and their families, assess the vulnerability of the herds to cumulative effects of all factors influencing caribou, protect the herds from serious decline, and safeguard harvesting opportunities for current and future generations. The Nunavut sub-project is scheduled for March 2017 to March 2018.
