The Youth in Transition (YIT) project is a longitudinal study of four nationally representative cohorts of young people. This is the cohort of respondents born in 1975. Variables encompass five primary areas: i. overall test results; ii. secondary school - level attained, educational and employment plans for the future, views on school, type of school attended and reasons for leaving school before completing Year 12; iii. post-secondary education/training including study area, institution attended, qualification received, reasons for continuing study and financial assistance received; iv. employment history including number of full-time and part-time jobs held since leaving school, type of job, weekly income and hours worked, and v. unemployment including length of time unemployed, reasons for unemployment and problems faced obtaining a job. Other variables include self-concept of ability, general feelings about life, financial matters and division of labour both at home and at work. Background variables include age, sex, country of birth, ethnic identity, language spoken at home, family size, living arrangements, marital status, number of children and some demographic information (e.g country of birth, level of education) for the respondents parents.
