Background: This study aimed to quantitatively define the relationships between testing results obtained via multiple distinct platforms (antigen versus RT-qPCR), shedding of infectious virus, and self-reported disease symptoms over the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Materials/Methods: This study utilized cohorts of adult students and employees of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Northwestern University who had been identified as being in isolation or quarantine for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Participants collected samples of saliva and nasal swabs for 14 days (or until the end of the quarantine period if the individual never tested positive for SARS-CoV-2). Every day, the participants also received an email with a link to a survey regarding symptoms. The initial survey also included an entry questionnaire with questions about the participant. Two to four months after study completion, participants completed an exit questionnaire with health-related questions. Outcome/Impact: The study findings assessed multiple diagnostic test results over time, along with live virus shedding among individuals who had been identified as infected earlier in the infection process. Longitudinal sampling of participants contributed crucial information to the relationship between testing results and transmission risk from presymptomatic and asymptomatic individuals.
