Strain of C. necator was evolved through thirty passages of adaptive laboratory evolution which increased its halotolerance from 1.5% NaCl to 3.25% NaCl. The strain showed greater susceptibility to lysis in distilled water which can be exploited for simplified separations of intracellular products in industrial applications. Variants contributing to halotolerance were identified by comparing whole genome sequences of the evolved halotolerant strain and the parent wild-type strain.
