Dataset: Sex dimorphism in superficial muscle and adipose tissue composition assessed by broadband time domain diffuse optical spectroscopy in healthy adults

This dataset presents the underlying data of the scientific article titled – ‘Sex dimorphism in superficial muscle and adipose tissue composition assessed by broadband time domain diffuse optical spectroscopy in healthy adults’. In this dataset, we provide information regarding the data, tools to read it, the acquisition methods, and analysis techniques, so as to provide a means for others to replicate our results or use them for other purposes. Briefly, the data set is divided into 4 folders - OVERVIEW, DATA, TOOLS and RESULTS to be read in that order for better understanding. We present the data of a pilot study using broadband time domain diffuse optical spectroscopy (TD-DOS) to investigate in vivo tissue composition in healthy adults at two anatomical sites: the thigh over the vastus lateralis muscle and the abdomen. Optical measurements at multiple source‒detector (S-D) distances were combined with ultrasound assessments of skin and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) thickness. We quantified the absorption and reduced scattering spectra and estimated the local contents of lipids, water, collagen, total hemoglobin, and oxygen saturation.
