Growth of grassroots organizations in rural Myanmar: the role of technological factors

Grassroots organisations (GROs) in rural communities are essential promoters of community welfare, education, and development opportunities. This study examines how emerging GROs utilise technology and the factors contributing to their growth in rural Myanmar. The technology-organisation- environment (TOE) framework was used to understand different aspects of grassroots growth, especially technological expansion. Although research has been devoted to large enterprises and major organisational structures, the role of GROs in representation at the grassroots level has remained underexamined, despite their geosocial and political significance for the rural demographic majority in Myanmar. The results indicate that using technology such as digital devices and platforms advances GROs’ role in the community development field. Yet simultaneous coordination among respective stakeholders to improve information and communication technologies (ICT) infrastructure and digital literacy has yet to expand incrementally to wider rural communities. For now, GROs are principal agents for transforming rural development to create advantages frominclusive development in Myanmar.
