The reference strain for the γ-proteobacteria Idiomarina loihiensis, L2TR, was originally isolated from a hydrothermal vent at 1,300-m depth on the Loihi submarine volcano, located off the coast of Hawai’i main island (1). The L2TR genome sequence suggests that the organism relies primarily on amino acid catabolism for carbon and energy. We isolated several bacteria that showed a 16S identity of >99% with L2TR from Great Salt Lake, Utah (GSL), an environment of low temperatures, extreme salt concentration, and high UV radiation, when compared to the conditions where the L2TR strain was originally isolated. In an effort to better understand the microbial adaptation to extreme environments we have sequenced the genome of Idiomarina strain isolated from GSL identified as GSL199. Idiomarina lohinensis isolated for the hyper saline arm of Great Salt Lake UT.
