Draft Genome of Staphylococcus capitis APC2923. Staphylococcus capitis strain:APC2923

This study describes the discovery of a very different variant of the lantibiotic nisin that hasnine changes at the amino acid level when compared to wild type nisin A. The geneorganization in the bacteriocin gene cluster is unique as it appears to be missing key genesinvolved in immunity and regulation. Interestingly this is the first nisin produced by a staphylococcal species and the fact that it was isolated from the skin microbiota of different individuals suggests it could be a key property of these strains contributing to competition and dominance over other related and unrelated species.
