In collaboration with Laura Kamenitsky, Gisela Francini and Lucas Maldonado (Bueno Aires Medical School and La Plata Veterinary School, and funded by the Royal Society and CONICET) we aim to sequence the genome of the giant kidney worm Dioctophyme renale. This will provide a basis for ongoing analysis of the physiology of this parasite, of its epidemiology and for development of sequence based surveillance methodologies. The Argentinian team has been working on D.renale for a decade. The genome project has been running since 2017, and a draft genome has been generated. We now plan to improve this genome and perfom RNA seq to generate high quality annotation before publicaton. This phase will be completed by April 2020. A subsequent phase, largely carried out by the Argentinian team, involving development and deployment of epidemiological and population genomic toolkits will be initiated thereafter.
