Replicable Multilevel Network Pipeline for the Analysis of Falangist Discourse (1939–1941)

This repository provides the full replication package for the chapter “From Bureaucratic Control to Social Tension: A Multilevel and Replicable Analysis of Falangist Discourse (1939–1941)”. The dataset and scripts implement a reproducible pipeline for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of early Francoist Falangist texts, combining conceptual operationalization, document–concept networks, and controlled document–document projections. The analytical framework draws on Bernard Bailyn’s theory of cultural change and integrates a Foucauldian perspective on bureaucratic control as a discursive dispositif. The workflow consists of:(1) text extraction and lemmatization;(2) mapping documents to analytically defined conceptual layers (external pressure, social resistance, internal conflict, bureaucratic control) using versioned dictionaries;(3) construction of weighted document–concept networks (normalized per 1,000 tokens);(4) projection into document–document semantic similarity networks using cosine similarity;(5) comparative analyses through IDF weighting, z-score normalization, and layer-separated projections;(6) causal decomposition of network ties, identifying the relative contribution of each conceptual layer and the dimensions that differentiate documents. All scripts are written in Python and are designed to be executed sequentially. The repository includes a detailed README, environment specifications, intermediate and final outputs (tables and figures), and visualization scripts corresponding to the figures presented in the chapter. This package enables full transparency and methodological replication and is intended for researchers working in digital history, historical discourse analysis, political culture, and network-based approaches to historical texts.
