In March 1996 the Ministry of Cultural Affairs sent out questionnaires to approx. 66,000 households in Viborg, Odense and Valby. In addition, the questionnaire was available at post offices all over the country so that everybody had a chance to participate. # The purpose of the project was to arouse a national debate on cultural policy which may form the basis of the discussions in the parliament on cultural policy in the coming years. # The questions asked may be divided into the following groups: #1. Use of art and culture: #- use of art and culture in the municipality #- whether the respondent is active #- degree of satisfaction with the offers in the municipality #2. Art and culture outside the respondent's municipality: #- use of art and culture outside the municipality #3. The importance of art and culture: #- good experiences with art within the last year #- the importance of new, experimental art for the respondent #- attitude to the task of preserving old art and culture at the # museums #- the importance of the state running these institutions #4. Public subsidies to art and culture: #- whether one's tax contribution to art and culture is worth the # money #- the respondent's proposal for a culture budget #5. User payment: #- attitude to more user payment within art and culture #- whether the amount the state pays to the Royal Theatre's # various tasks is reasonable #6. Interference in art: #- whether it should be possible to intervene against # state-subsidized offensive art #7. State subsidies to artists: #- how the state should subsidize artists #8. Local influence: #- attitude to the distribution of the tasks between the state and # the municipalities #9. Political debate and democracy: #- possibilities of participating in the political debate #- whether it is easy or difficult to get acquainted with current # political issues #- membership of a political party #- whether the respondent is active in an association or an # interest organization #- whether the respondent has written a reader's letter or has # participated in a local radio or TV programme within the last # year #- whether the respondent would participate if he/she got the # possibility of engaging in other political areas than cultural # policy
