2025 Survey of UK University HPC facility availability and support

A dataset containing the results of a review of High Performance Computing facilities and research facilitation support for them in the form of digital research support services.This list was human-curated between June - August 2025 by the lead researcher using the following methodology: The 141 members of Universities UK were used as the starting list, excluding an associate members (e.g. the University of Gibraltar) Agreement of relevant variables to collect information on. Theese were the name of the university, the number of students, whether it is public or private, whether they have access to HPC facilities (internal or external), whether they have a digital research support team, and contact details. Contact details can be for a generic team email or for a specific person, where one could be identified. Named people are ones that were identified as responsible for the cluster, as research facilitators, or as responsible for research services. Information was filled in using publicly available information online. The Google search to find out if a university has HPC facilities was [name of university] AND “HPC cluster”. To identify digital research support services, searches were more varied. Sometimes it was possible to follow links from the HPC pages; where that was not possible, search for [name of university] AND ‘research computing’ OR ‘research IT’ OR ‘research software engineering’ OR ‘research data management’ This dataset was then used to select a representative set of universities to perform a landscape review which took into account the data captured in this dataset, as well as ranking tables on the subjects of Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering, Medical and Health and, to a lesser extent, Business and Economics and Psychology on the World University Rankings by Times Higher Education. As a result, additional UK universities were identified that were not part of Universities UK, and the same information collection approach used, taking the total in this list to 155 universities in this dataset. This version of the dataset has had any details of individuals, as well as emails, removed.Headings: Name: The name of the university Universities-UK: (Yes / No) Is the university a member of Universities UK? Access to Tier-2 Facilities: (Yes / No) Does the university have an agreement that allows access to Tier-2 HPC facilities for its staff and students? Digital Research support: (Yes / No) Does the university have specialist staff to provide support to its staff and students to use Digital Research Infrastructure (including HPC)?
