Human SH-SY5Y neuronal cells were exposed to environmental plastic that had been recovered from the gastrointestinal tracts of wild free-ranging post-hatchling loggerhead sea turtles, and equivalent virgin plastic. Here we measure the transcriptomic response of such exposure as the plastic induced a loss of neuronal cell viability and increased apoptosis. The goal of this research is to better understand the effects of near ubiquitous plastic exposure (and ingestion) for humans and sea turtles.
