Global anticipated rail energy demand growth by region

China's rail energy demand is anticipated to double by 2050, overtaking that of North America. Every region listed is expected to see an increase in energy demand levels in its respective railway network with the exception of Japan. With its high share of electrified railway systems, Japan's rail energy demand is set to shrink by 2050 from around 2.9 to 2.4 million metric tons of oil equivalent.
