Our study utilizes a new technology we developed, which allows us to simultaneously track the colonization kinetics of 5 different E. coli strains in an individual mouse GI tract simultaneously. We then sequenced the genomes of these 5 strains to identify the genetic factors that allow one strain to outcompete the others. This study helps identify factors that are important for persistent E. coli colonization in an intact, physiologic, GI microbiome.
