A Volatility Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer (V-TDMA) consisting of an electrostatic classifier, a thermo-denuder and an SMPS (Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer, in-house designed column with a 3010 CPC) measured the volatile content of particles. The V-TDMA gave the change in particulate diameter for six pre-selected sizes. The volumetric volatile fraction (VVF) for each size was calculated from the difference in diameter of particles before and after the thermo-denuder. The total amount of volatile matter is calculated for every sampling point and the parameter used for its quantification is the Overall Volatility (OV). OV is the fraction of total organics measured in the particulate phase to the total measured volume of particulate matter. An in-house developed profluorescent molecular probe BPEAnit was applied to assess particulate oxidative potential. The relationships between the variables were analysed using the linear regression or generalised linear model with a log link function. The model assumptions were validated using the residuals versus fit values and QQ plots. The resulting fit functions, and their 95% condense intervals, indicate the relationship between the variables.
Modelling and visualisations were performed using the ggplot2 package in R. The data consists of: 121 raw files from two instruments: Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and Volatility Tandem Mobility Analyser (VTDMA); 12 Excel files containing some roughly processed data from the raw data; 12 .CSV files containing sorted and prepared data for using in R; 19 figures generated by R. File formats: Raw files are in .P80 and .S80 formats; Excel files are in .xls format; R data is in .CSV format; 11 figures are in .PDF format; 8 figures are in .TIFF format; Technical attributes of data collection: P80 and S80 files can be read by TIS Aerosol Instrument Manager; .XLS files are accessible using MS Excel; .CVS files are usable by any data processing software; .PDF file can be seen by Adobe Reader; .TIFF file can be viewed using any image viewer software.
This research forms part of the project Effect of atmospheric ageing on volatility and ROS of biodiesel exhaust nano-particles.
