资源简介:
The primary objective of this investigation was to understand why protein crystallization experiments in microgravity have generated unexpectedly low or high numbers of crystals. Each outcome may cause experiments designed to obtain a small number of well-separated crystals to fail.
The objective of the proposed investigations is to explore the effects of a hitherto unstudied factor for the nucleation of protein crystals: solution shear flow. Besides providing a novel tool for nucleation control for protein crystallization experiments, the correlation between solution flows and protein crystal nucleation, to be tested in the proposed investigation, will shed light on one of the major mysteries of current space biophysics: the finding that in many cases the number of crystals nucleated in microgravity was greater or smaller than those nucleated on earth.
