A Dataset of Household Demographic Characteristics, Income & Expenditure, and Water Use in the Mwanza Region, Tanzania

This dataset is derived from a household survey conducted in 12 villages of the Mwanza Region, Tanzania in September 2021. The survey covered two municipal districts and two out of the six rural districts in Mwanza, including six villages with and six villages without piped water supply. Ten households were randomly selected for face-to-face interviews in each village. After excluding one household with outlier expenditure data, a total of 119 valid household questionnaires were retained (60 from villages with piped water supply and 59 from villages without piped water supply).The dataset comprises three modules: (1) Household demographic characteristics (household size, number of dependents, and overall education level); (2) Household income and medical expenditure (annual household income, annual medical expenditure, and the share of medical expenditure in total household expenditure); (3) Water use (water treatment methods, and diarrhea incidence). This dataset can be used to analyze the associations among piped water accessibility, household water treatment behaviors, and household health outcomes.This dataset contains two files: (1) data_share.dta – Stata data file containing raw survey data from 119 households; (2) do_file_share.do – Stata Do-file containing complete code for data cleaning, variable construction, descriptive statistics, and main analyses. Running this Do-file reproduces all analytical results presented in the associated paper. The data have been anonymized through an effective and irreversible de-identification process that prevents re-identification of any individual or household through any means.
