This dataset underlies the article under review in philosophical transactions B "Cardiac and respiratory signals contribute to behavioral performance in a Go/No-go task" authored by Océane Mauroux, Sélima Zahar, Andria Pelentritou, Giovanni Chiarion, Sergi Blanco-Cuaresma, Fosco Bernasconi, Olaf Blanke and Marzia De Lucia. Participants performed a visual Go/No-go task while electrocardiographic (ECG) and respiratory signals (respiratory belt) were continuously recorded. Visual stimuli were presented under two conditions: synchronous condition, in which stimuli were time-locked to electrocardiogram R-peaks, and asynchronous condition, in which stimuli were presented without a fixed relationship to the cardiac cycle. Each participant completed 8 experimental blocks, with four blocks assigned to the synchronous condition and four blocks assigned to the asynchronous condition. Each block comprised 150 trials, and each trial began with a cue indicating that a stimulus could appear. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Data structure: Each row corresponds to a single trial for a given participant and includes experimental labels, task timing variables, behavioral outcomes, cardiac measures and respiratory measures. The full dataset comprises 32 participants × 8 blocks × 150 trials per block, excluding catch and easy trials, as well as trials with non-reliable responses, defined as reaction times below 150 ms. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Experimental factors: • Subject: participant identifier • Block: block number (1–8) • Trial: trial number within block (1–150) • Condition: stimulation condition (synchronous / asynchronous) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Endpoints: Control measures: • Stim_to_stim_interval: Duration between stimulus onset and the onset of the subsequent stimulus (ms) • Cue_to_stimulus_interval: Duration between cue and stimulus onset within a trial (ms) • Cardiac_phase_stim: Angular position within the cardiac cycle at stimulus onset (radians, 0–2π) • Rpeak_to_stimulus_interval: Latency between R-peak and stimulus onset (ms; always positive) Behavioral measures: • RT: Reaction time (ms); time from stimulus onset to the first button press, recorded on both Go and No-go trials. Responses occurring within 150 ms of stimulus onset were considered unreliable and coded as missing (np.nan). Trials with no response were also coded as missing (np.nan) • Beh_resp_type: Behavioral response outcome (TP = correct Go response; TN = correct No-go response) Cardiac measures: • RR_pre : RR interval preceding stimulus presentation (ms) • RR_stimulus: RR interval containing stimulus onset (ms) • RR_post: RR interval following stimulus presentation (ms) • RR_mean: RR interval averaged across all RR intervals within the trial (ms) Respiratory variables: • Resp_length: Respiratory cycle duration (ms) • Stimulus_angle_in_respiration: Respiratory phase at stimulus onset (radians, 0–2π) • Press_angle_in_respiration: Respiratory phase at button press (radians, 0–2π). Respiratory cycle without a button press were assigned a missing value (np.nan)
