This raster dataset provides a simplified model of light pollution across the continental U.S. in units of all-sky average artificial to natural light ratios for the year 2012. The model is generated using the 2012 annual cloud-free composite of VIIRS day/night band satellite imagery (Version 2.1) produced by the Earth Observation Group. Unlike subsequent years (2013 onward) where composites use satellite imagery from the entire year, satellite imagery was only available during nine months (April through December) in 2012. The modeling process is described in Duriscoe et al. 2018 (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jqsrt.2018.04.028).
