Optimization of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Performance through Novel Hybrid Passive Flow-Field Control Technique

This study investigates the impact of a hybrid flow control technique, combining dimples and winglets, on the aerodynamic performance of horizontal axis wind turbines. Computational fluid dynamics tools were used to conduct the study. The modified blades with dimples on the suction side had a superior aerodynamic performance at higher blade pitch angles, particularly under high wind speed conditions. The combination of dimples and winglets exhibited up to an 11.75% improvement in performance compared to the original blade, indicating a potential for significantly enhancing the performance of wind turbines and contributing to meeting global demand for renewable energy.
