Preforms, the reinforcing skeletons of composite materials, are woven from thousands of fiber tows. The fiber tows within the preform may sustain friction damage of varying degrees due to interweaving movements during the weaving process, and the wear of fibers will lead to a mechanical property loss rate of up to 9%–12% for the preform. Therefore, revealing the friction and wear mechanisms of fiber tows during the weaving process is of great significance for improving the mechanical properties of preforms. This paper reviews the research progress on the friction behavior of fiber tows in recent years: First, the advantages and disadvantages of fiber tow-metal and fiber tow-fiber tow friction testing methods are outlined; Second, the influencing mechanisms of friction angle, friction frequency, pre-tension and normal load on the friction performance of fiber tows are analyzed; Finally, the theoretical analysis models for the friction and wear behavior of fiber tows are summarized. This review provides valuable guidance for the forming process design of composite preforms and the quantitative analysis of fiber tow friction damage.
