NRS-384 | Ledger of advances on account of the Public Service

The ledger records funds advanced to public servants, chiefly to the heads of Government departments to enable them to carry out the functions of their department. Details of the recipient's name, position, date of loan and repayment, reason for the loan and amount, are given. The most extensive accounts are in the names of T.L. Mitchell - Survey Department, Roads and Bridges and Public Works; M.W. Lewis - Colonial Architect; and James Brown - Acting Collector of Customs. Typical entries are "To pay contractors for erecting out Buildings at the Kings School, Parramatta" or "To purchase oxen for the department".
