Singularities in the Streets: Bodies, Incongruity and the Metaethical Effect

An urban environment can itself be conceived of as a body, functioning either in a healthy manner or “dysfunctioning” because of errors and disharmonies in its conception. This paper examines a certain number of projects that aim to challenge the routine organization of the experience of the city via the injection of radical incongruity into the urban landscape. Such projects produce a renewed consciousness of the place of the body in the city and thus the place of the individual in society. This renewed consciousness occurs via the perception of incongruity and “singularity” in an otherwise ordinary urban situation.
