The impact of Chironomus larvae on methanogenesis and methane oxidation in was studied in a laboratory experiment. Ten instar III larvae were incubated in 30 ml serum vials containing 10 cm3 sediments and lake water to fill. Fill water was either hypolimnetic water or hypolimnetic water with 1.5% CH3F, a concentration designed to inhibit CH4oxidation. CH4 accumulation in sealed vials was measured in overlying water after 8 days.
