This dataset accompanies a publication to examine how chronic manipulation of haemoglobin-O2 affinity affects breathing and metabolism in deer mice. Low-altitude populations of deer mice were bred in standard lab conditions. Separate treatment groups were then administered cyanate (which carbamylates haemoglobin to increase its affinity) or saline (control) by intraperitoneal injection three times per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) for 4 weeks. This was conducted in adult mice as well as in mice during early post-natal development (starting on post-natal day 1) to examine whether the influence of Hb-O2 affinity is life-stage specific.
