The Trinity of State Decay (Part 1): Sovereign Decoupling and Rival Sovereignty — A Theoretical Statement

The Trinity of State Decay (TSD) advances a theoretical claim: state decay in the Global South is not a mere institutional malfunction but a profound sovereignty event—the structural decoupling of juridical statehood from empirical authority into rival orders. This departs from failed state theory, hybrid governance, and fragility frameworks, which operate at the national aggregate and cannot explain the coexistence of functional and decoupled sovereignty within the same juridical unit. TSD identifies a process driven by constitutional erasure and the violent amendment of the constitution, where formal legal structures are aggressively hollowed out or co-opted to serve extractive networks. This erosion manifests in two distinct formations: the Institutional Mirage, which performs authority without possessing it, and the Shadow Order, which governs without formal legitimacy. Their interaction is sustained by the Money-Land-Mind dynamic, displacing financial, territorial, and normative authority from the state to rival structures. Decay is zonal before national, partial before total.
