White and green striate leaves 1, predicted to encode a 16S rRNA processing protein, plays an critical role in the processing of chloroplast ribosomes in maize (Zea mays L.)

Taken together, our results demonstrate that the mutation in WGSL1 results in maize plants with white and green striate leaves, low chlorophyll content, and decreased photosynthesis rate. The mutation also leads to impaired chloroplast development and affects the expression of genes controlling core components of the ribosomal subunit, resulting in impaired processing of ribosomes in chloroplasts.
